African-American pilot, of South Carolina; native of Mountville, Laurens County, S.C.; student at Hampton Institute (Hampton, Va.); B.S., Benedict College (Columbia, S.C.); M.S., University of Wisconsin; U.S. Army Air Corps pilot and flight instructor at Tuskegee Flying School during World War II; trained fighter pilots who became members of the African-American 99th Pursuit Squadron and the 332nd Fighter Group; educator, Richland School District One, Columbia, S.C.; Henderson was inducted into South Carolina Aviation Hall of Fame, 1991; Aviator of the Year, South Carolina Aeronautics Commission, 1991; inducted into South Carolina Black Hall of Fame, 1993. In 1945, Henderson married Ophelia Minerva Penn (1920-2000), a union that produced three children.
