Demorest's New-York Illustrated News was a newspaper that was active during the American Civil War.
From the guide to the Demorest's New-York Illustrated News Woodcut collection, 1861-1865, 1861-1865, (University of Marland Libraries)
The New-York Illustrated News was first published on November 12, 1859. It was modelled after other illustrated newspapers such as Frank Leslie's Illustrated News and Harper's Weekly. It had several owners and editors in its first several years, and briefly employed illustrators Thomas Nast and Alfred Waud (before they both joined Harper's Weekly by 1862). It was sold to publisher and businessman W. Jennings Demorest in early 1864, at which point it became Demorest's New-York Illustrated News. It seems to have been merged into one of Demorest's other properties (such Demorest's Illustrated Monthly Magazine or Mme. Demorest's Mirror of Fashion) in mid-1864.
