The John Crerar Library was incorporated on October 12, 1894 and opened to the public on April 1, 1897. The Library was established as a free public research library specializing in the sciences. Because of changes in scientific information and continuing financial pressures, the Crerar Board of Directors agreed to consolidate the Crerar collections with those in science, medicine, and technology at the University of Chicago. The merger took place in 1984 with the move of the collections to a new building on the campus of the University of Chicago.
