The Legislative Energy Committee was formed in 1975 as a two-year interim committee of the New Mexico State Legislature in response to the "energy crisis". The Committee's mission was to gather information toward the preparation of a state energy resource policy. The Committee's efforts culminated in the 1977 creation of the New Mexico Energy and Minerals Department, whose purpose included the development and administration of a statewide plan for energy resources (1977 Laws of N.M., Chp. 255, Sec. 3).
