Allston was an American painter of portraits and historical, religious and allegorical subjects. He attended Harvard University and then went to Europe to study between 1800-1808, and again between 1811-1818. Allston spent the remainder of his life in Cambridge, MA where he produced little work but influenced many of his contemporaries.

The American painter Washington Allston began his artistic career in England. In 1818 he was elected an associate of the Royal Academy in London, and honorary member of the American Academy of the Fine Arts in New York.
