Army officer; Lieutenant assigned to 6th Cavalry in 1877. He served as commander of Indian scouts in the Apache country of Arizona and New Mexico taking part in campaigns that included the Victorio War of 1879-1880, Gen. Crook's expedition into the Sierra Madre in 1883, and the Geronimo Campaign of 1885-1886. He was responsible for delivering Gen. Mile's message to Geronimo and persuading him to surrender.
