The State Planning Office was a staff division in the Office of the Governor established by the General Assembly in 1935. It was the first state planning office in the nation and consisted of the State Planning Division and a Local Planning division. The State Planning Division was primarily responsible for long-range state planning, short range program development, policy-oriented research activities, examination of legislative proposals, policy development, interagency coordination, federal-state relations and local-state relations. The Local Division provides professional planning assistance to cities and counties through comprehensive planning and community development.
