Herbert Allen Giles (1845-1935), sinologist, was born at Oxford on 8 December 1845, and educated at Charterhouse School. He served in the consular service, 1867-1893, and was Professor of Chinese at Cambridge University, 1897-1932. Giles published many books on Chinese culture. He died in Cambridge on 13 February 1935.
