"軍神の母 Gunshin no haha" (Mother of a war god)
Information
Date - 1942 June 10
Summary -
A kind, hardworking mother named Saku does all that she can without complaining to support her son Sadamu. Though they are poor, she convinces his father to send him to middle school, and when Sadamu decides to join the navy rather than supporting the family business, she allows him to do as he pleases. Sadamu eventually becomes one of the nine war gods who sacrificed their lives in the attack on Pearl Harbor.
The moral of the story is that mothers should be hardworking, stoic, and respectful. They should selflessly raise their sons well so that they may become war gods who will dedicate their lives to the empire.

NARRATOR
Late spring has finally arrived at the village of Kurasako, although the volcano Mt. Gongen is still snowcapped.
Buds of green barley have started sprouting in this high plain village, about 50 kilometers north of Hiroshima city, at an elevation of 300 meters above sea level.
(Pull the slide.)
Card 1
VILLAGER
Mr. Ichiemon, you work really hard. By the way, rumor has it your boy Sadamu will go to middle school. Is that right?
ICHIEMON
Oh, no. Children say such outrageous things.
VILLAGER
I hear Sadamu is a good student this year, too. Middle school is good for him but he's the eldest son. After he finishes school, why don’t you teach him how to farm? Both you and I have to make sure our children grow up, so we can take it easy a little. Ha ha ha ha.
Well, I have to run.
(Pull the slide.)
Card 2
SAKU
Father, I really want to send Sadamu to middle school.
ICHIEMON
But think about it. We used to run a stable business. Our current situation, having a hard time making ends meet by cultivating fields, is not the same as before. It's out of our reach.
SAKU
I know it's a tall order, but the reason our business failed was because you didn't know how to write. I really want to have all our children educated, not only Sadamu. Please allow Sadamu to do what he wants. For that, I'll do whatever it takes. I’ll work and earn to fill the gap in tuition.
(Pull the slide.)
Card 3
NARRATOR
A piercing cold draft woke up Sadamu. He found his mother's futon empty. As soon as his parents decided to send Sadamu to middle school, his mother woke up 2 hours earlier in the morning and stayed up an extra 3 hours at night to peel kozo skins. This is to earn money for Sadamu's tuition.
Farmers typically already wake up early in the morning, so waking up two hours earlier means a 4:00 AM wakeup call.
SADAMU
I'm sorry, mother.
(Pull the slide swiftly.)
Card 4
SAKU
Sadamu, you are already up!
You should catch one more hour of sleep. You stayed up late last night to study for the entrance exam.
SADAMU
Mother, I'll help you.
SAKU
What are you talking about? Don't worry about me. All you have to do is study hard.
SADAMU
But mother, you sleep so little. I don't want you to get sick.
SAKU
I will never get sick. I'm so looking forward to sending you to middle school.
(Pull the slide.)
Card 5
NARRATOR
After peeling skin after skin, his mother's fingers are bloody. Mother always sacrifices herself for her children. No matter how hard it is, she never complains. She always works quietly. Gentle and kind-hearted mother ...
Tears of gratitude wet Sadamu's cheeks.
(Pull the slide.)
Card 6
AN OLD MAN
The Ichiemons are a little strange. While both of the parents work barefoot, their son goes to middle school in Shinjo, wearing shoes and a hat.
AN OLD WOMAN
The Ichiemons’ Sadamu is different from your son.
OLD MAN
What, what do you mean?
OLD WOMAN
Oh, did I upset you? My, I can't even joke with you.
(Pull the slide.)
Card 7
SADAMU
What happened, mother? What is this?
SAKU
I had some spare time in the fields, so I decided to help a lumber company a little. Did you finish all the homework you were working on late last night?
SADAMU
All this because I entered middle school…Mother, Mother, you even carry such heavy lumber.
(Pull the slide.)
Card 8
NARRATOR
As Sadamu reached the cedar forest on the dark road, he could not help but cry behind his mother.
(A pause.)
For the next five years until Sadamu graduated from Shinjo Middle School, there was no telling how many times the same tears ran down his cheeks.
(Pull the slide.)
Card 9
NEIGHBOR’S WIFE
Ma’am, congratulations. You must be relieved Sadamu graduated with good grades.
SAKU
Indeed, thanks to everyone’s help.
NEIGHBOR’S WIFE
Now that Sadamu has finished middle school, what is he going to do?
SAKU
I think he will decide after visiting his school teacher who took care of him ...
NEIGHBOR’S WIFE
You can finally take it easy now.
(Pull the slide.)
Card 10
SAKU
I wonder why Sadamu sent us a letter. If he has something to tell us, he can do so after he comes home.
ICHIEMON
O-saku, don't wait. Read it for me.
(A pause.)
SAKU
Since my childhood, I have yearned for the sea. After I successfully graduated from middle school, I genuinely considered the importance of oceanic development and the position of the Imperial Navy. No student from the Shinjo Middle School has joined the Navy. No Ueda man has become a soldier. Luckily, my body is healthy, I’d like to render my services to the Navy. As the eldest son, I hate to ask your help, but please ask Father for his permission.
(Pull the slide.)
Card 11
ICHIEMON
What on earth! He finally graduated, and now he wants to join the Navy.
(A short pause.)
SAKU
Father, let's allow it. He sent us a letter. He must have made up his mind.
ICHIEMON
But I only wish he thought about our family a little bit more.
SAKU
Please let him do what he says. Until today I always let him do whatever he wanted to do. What he decides to do is going to be fine. Well, we will be able to manage. We just have to pretend as if he was still going to middle school.
(A pause.)
NARRATOR
With his mother's encouragement, Sadamu exultantly joined the Kure Navy training unit in June 1934.
(Pull the slide.)
Card 12
(A pause.)
NARRATOR (continued)
After receiving training at the Kure unit, Sadamu boarded Destroyer Sanae. He joined the defense unit in Maizuru and graduated from the naval mine school. He was transferred to the upper naval mine school and graduated with the best grades in June 1940. Meanwhile, the Sino-Japanese War front expanded every year. American and British ambition in aiming at the life of our Empire became increasingly apparent. The mission of the Imperial Navy,
(As you pull the slide)
NARRATOR (continued)
became all the more critical in the fall of 1941.
Card 13
SAKU
(Joyfully)
Sadamu, it’s you? How did you get time off with your busy schedule!
SADAMU
I am taking three days off this time. I missed you, mother.
SAKU
You say things like a child. Your complexion doesn't seem very good, though.
SADAMU
I have a headache. I probably caught a cold. Where’s father?
SAKU
Your father is repairing the mountain bridge that fell. If you have a touch of cold, why don't you take some medicine?
(A short pause)
SADAMU
I'm alright. The water in the valley must be cold by now.
(Increasingly gaining strength)
I'll go take a look.
(Pull the slide.)
Card 14
ICHIEMON
Stop it. You don't have to take off your clothes.
SADAMU
Anyway, please get out of the water. I'll take over.
ICHIEMON
Stop it. You are so impatient.
SADAMU
Father, I always make you work. It's my turn today.
ICHIEMON
Are you alright, Sadamu?
SADAMU
I'm in the Navy. I'm totally fine with the water.
(Pull the slide.)
Card 15
ICHIEMON
Sadamu, how about delaying your return to the Navy by one day? You have a 39-degree fever, and your doctor ordered you to stay in bed; otherwise, you might develop a complication.
SAKU
You soaked in the cold water of the valley for half a day, although you had a cold. Why don't you apply for an extension of your holidays and take one more day off now?
SADAMU
I'm alright. I go back to the Navy by bus. As long as I can move, I'll go back.
ICHIEMON
If you push yourself that much, you’ll get worse later.
SADAMU
Whatever happens later is a different story. I'll go back to the Navy.
SAKU
I'm sorry we spoiled your holidays.
(A short pause)
(Pull the slide quietly.)
Card 16
SAKU
Are you sure you will be alright?
SADAMU
Of course, I will be.
SAKU
Take care.
SADAMU
Thank you. You too, take care of yourself.
SISTER
Brother, when are you coming home again?
(A short pause)
SADAMU
Well, if you all listen to Mother well and are good at home, I'll take another holiday and come home.
SISTER 2
Really?
SADAMU
Yes, of course.
SISTER 2
I'm happy!
(As you pull the slide)
SISTER 2
Brother, your bus is here.
Card 17
SADAMU
Mother!
NARRATOR
After a few steps, he stopped and called his mother.
SAKU
What's the matter?
SADAMU
Mother, please, please take care of yourself.
SAKU
That's something I want to ask of you.
SADAMU
I always made you endure so many hardships. Please live a long and happy life.
NARRATOR
These were Sadamu’s last words to his mother.
(A short pause)
(Pull the slide quickly.)
Card 18
NARRATOR (continued)
On December 8th, 1941,
Senior master sergeant Sadamu was among the nine war gods of Showa, who attacked the US main naval fleet in the Pacific at Pearl Harbor and achieved incredible results. These war gods dedicated themselves to the nation and perished like flowers in defense of the country.
When they boarded the planes for Pearl Harbor and attacked the enemies, they must have been elevated as close to the gods as possible. This brave, patriotic story was reported in Japan; the Japanese people couldn't help but weep with gratitude.
(Pull the slide.)
Card 19
SADAMU
Mother, be joyous.
I did it!
NARRATOR
(A pause)
Sadamu responded to his mother's great love, and his gratitude was equally magnificent. Sadamu's mother selflessly worked hard for her son. Saku's endurance and hardship gloriously bloomed in senior master Sergeant Sadamu's body.
(Pulling the slide quietly)
NARRATOR (continued)
A great mother comparable to the mother of ShÃ…ÂnankÃ…Â, the mother of Yoshida Shoin, the mother of General Nogi.
The great mother who nurtured a war god.
While the entire nation was exalting Sadamu in gratitude,
(Pull the slide.)
Card 20
NARRATOR (continued)
The mother of the war god, Saku is carrying a heavy load of lumber as usual through the morning dew in a high plain village. She misses master Sergeant Sadamu.
(In a high pitch)
This mother is the exemplar of a Japanese mother, who gave birth to one of the nine war gods of Showa. She's respectful, kind, and modest.
(Pull the slide quietly.)
Card 21
ARRATOR (continued)
Now is the time to demonstrate the united spirits of the Great Nippon Youth Group.
This fall, it's time to show our passionate patriotism and dedicate ourselves to the empire, by saving.
Let's have a united front.
Let's plan ahead. If we do so, we will realize our goal.
Together with the spirit and the power of the Great Nippon Youth Group!
(The end.)
