Summary

Sankichi led the village children to cultivate barren land for rice production. However, he got injured in a fire and was rescued by an anonymous young man. When the village’s rich old man Genbei refused to lend money for Sankichi’s surgery, the villagers came together to help. Drought hit the village, and villagers pleaded with Genbei to open his pond sluice. However, he refused in favor of his own profiteering. The angry villagers forgave Genbei after they learned that his son had rescued Sankichi and that he had received a draft order. Their dedication to the Emperor moved Genbei, and he decided to open the sluice for the villagers.

This kamishibai promotes moral teaching and dedication to the nation and the Emperor in rural communities under the guidance of the Imperial Rule Assistance Association.

二、田 植
此處は、都を遠く遠くはなれた、或る片田舍です。村の人達は 今、一粒の米もふやさうと、田植に一生懸命です。
三吉は、今まで皆んなと夢中になって、野遊びをしてゐましたが、ふと、その、忙しく働く姿を見て、ぢつと考へました。
(少し間)
（獨り言、子供っぽく）
―僕達も、日本の小國民だ。かうして、遊んでばかりゐては、 いけない………何かお國のために、盡すことをしなくては……

三、開 墾
かうして、三吉が、極樂寺の小坊主の、了念や友達に、相談して始めたのが、荒地の開墾です。
（子供ッぽく意氣ごんで）
―僕達の力で、大人に負けない、立派な開墾地を作らうよ! と云ふので、誰も見向きもしない、この荒地に、木の根を掘り 返す者、モッコで石ころを運ぶ者、………(少し間) ………勉强の暇を 見ては此處へ集り、皆んなセッセと働いてゐます。 いつしか、夕方になってゐるのに、氣のついた三吉が、
（子供らしく心配さうに）
三吉 「了念さん、もう暗くなって來たよ。そろそろお寺へかへって、鐘を撞かないと、和尙さんに叱られるだらう」
といふと、衣の袖をたくし上げて、石運びの了念、

了念「あ、さうだっけ」
(ぬきながら)
かうして、今日も一日は、靜かに暮れてゆくのでした。

四、更けゆく村の夜
尊い汗を流して、野良からかへった人々は、一家團欒の夕飯を済ませますと、やがて、又明日も一生懸命働かうと、心に誓ひ乍ら、たのしい眠りにつきました。
さうして、鎭守の森の、梟のうつろな聲と共に、平和な村の夜は、靜かにふけて行ました。
(少し間)
（調子を變へて）
その眞夜中のことでした。
(ぬ く)

Card 4
五、火 事
ふと眼を醒ました了念が、厠に行かうとしますと、東の空が、ぼんやり明るくなってゐます。
（いぶかしげに、獨り言）
了念「おや、もう夜が明けたのかな」
しかし、よく見ると、―
了念「アツ、火事だ!大變だ!火事だ!」
了念は、吃驚して、大聲を立てながら、庭へ飛び降りました。

Card 5
六、燃える三吉の家
（半鐘の音）
ジャンジャンジャン、ジャンジャンジャン。
（强い調子で）
急いで火の見櫓に上った了念は、無中です。燃えてゐるのは、意外にも三吉の家なのです。 安らかに眠ってゐた、村の人達は、驚ろきあわてて飛び出しました。
村人達「火事は何處だ!」
村人達「三ちゃんの家だ!」
村人達「それ、行け! 」
(ぬ く)

Card 6
七、黑い人影
三吉の家は、天をもこがすばかりに眞赤に燃えて、火の粉を雨 のやうにふらせてゐます。駈けつけた村の人達は、一生懸命になって火を消しはじめました。すると、突然、
（あわてて、悲しみをこめて）
三吉の母「三吉を助けて……三吉が……三吉が……」
三吉のお母さんが氣狂ひのやうに叫びながら走って來ました。 その時――火の中に飛びこんで行った黑い人影があります。
(ぬ く)

Card 7
八、三吉救はる
若者「三吉君、もう大丈失だ、しりかりしろ!」
燃え狂ふ火焰の中から、三吉は、勇敢な若者の背に、辛くも救ひ出されました。
喜びをこめて
「あゝ、三吉!」
喜んだお母さんや、村の人々は、我を忘れて二人の傍へ駐け寄って來ましたが、
（ぬきながら)
（調子をかへて）
しかし、その喜びも束の間でした。

九、醫者 へ
（悲しげに）
氣を失った三吉は、かわいさうにも、大きな火傷と怪我をしてゐます。
（聲をはりあげて）
三吉の母「三吉！三吉や、しっかりおし! お母さんだよ」
お母さんは、氣狂ひのやうに、三吉の體を搖すぶります。
人々「お內儀さん、三ちゃんの傷は、かなり重さうだ。そんなことをしてゐないで、はやく醫者へ、連れて行かなくちゃ……」
三吉は早速、醫者へ運ばれました。
(少し間)
（調子をかへて）
それにしても―
人々 「三ちゃんを助けてくれたのは、一體、誰だらう」
人々は始めて、あの勇敢な若者のことに氣付きました。
（ぬく）

Card 9
十、極樂寺の離室
思ひがけない災難に遭ひ、家を失くした三吉母子は、了念の取 做しで、極樂寺の、離室に引き取られました。村のお醫者は、三吉の怪我が、意外に重いのに首をひねてゐます。
（心配さうに）
醫者 「このまゝにしておいては、不具になってしまふ。是非、一度町の病院で、大手術して貰はなくてはいけない。こんな田舍では、充分の手當も出來ないからね」
しかし手術をするのには、一文のお金もありません。
（途方に暮れたやうに）
三吉の母「はて、どうしたものだらうか」
お母さんは、お金の工面を心配しました。そして―
(ぬ く)

十一、源兵衞宅
（調子をつよく）
思案に餘った三吉のお母さんは、つひに、我が子可愛いさに深く決心して、村一番の金持源兵衞さんの家へ借金の申込みをしました。
（必死に）
三吉の母「私にとっては大切な三吉が、不具者になるかならぬかの 瀨戶際でございます。どうぞ暫くの間、御融通願へないでせうか」
（强慾らしく）
源兵衞「成程、話をきけばお氣の毒だ。しかし儂の方ぢや、利子も高いし、催促もきびしい。女手一人の、お前さんには鳥渡大變だ。 折角だが、まア、斷るよ」
かうあっさりとにべもなく、斷られては、全く取りつく島もな い。お母さんは、落膽してしまひました。
だが、しかし——
(ぬ く)

Card 11
十二、部落常會
その夜、極樂寺に開かれた、部落常會の席上、和尙さんは熱心に、村の人達に三吉母子の、みじめな有樣を訴へました。
（力强く說き聞かすやうに）
和尙「……と云ふ譯で、今その三吉さんが、みすみす不具者にならうとしてゐるんぢゃ。どうして儂共、同じこの立派な日本の國 に生れた同胞として、だまつて見てゐられやう。儂共が、三吉さんを救ふのは、陛下の赤子をお護りすることになるのぢゃ。是非共皆で、この義務を果さうではないか」
皆が大いに感動した時、突然隅の方から和尙さんの前へ躍り出て、お金を差出した者があります。
(ぬ く)

十三、お霜婆さん
それは、村でも働き者で有名な、お霜婆さんでした。
お霜婆さん「これは、僅かばかりぢゃが、永い間婆が節約してためたお金でナ、近いうちに國債買ふて、お國に御奉公する積りぢゃったが、
（真心こめて）
和尙さんのいまの話をきいてみりや、可哀想な三ちゃんのために費うても同じこと。どうぞまア早う、まともな體になるやう、皆さんで計らうてやって下され」
人々はお婆さんの言葉に感激して、これからは、お婆さんをお手本に貯蓄しやうといふことになりました。

十四、旱魃
（調子をかへて）
いつしか、暑い眞夏がやって參りました。村の人達が、苦勞して育てた稲も、ぢりぢり照りつける太陽にあってはたまりません。田の水は干上がって、稲は枯れるばかりです。さて、どうしたらいゝであらうか。
(ぬ く)

Card 14
十五、明神池
（少し言調を強めて）
結局、かうなっては、村端れにある明神池の、堰門を開けるより仕方がない。しかし困ったことには、この池は、慾ふかい源兵衞さんの所有です。
……(少し間)……
（強く）
しかし、もう皆我慢をして居られません。
(ぬきながら)
村人逹は代表を選んで、交涉に行きました。

十六、懇 願
（にくにくしく）
源兵衞「いやいや駄目ぢゃ。儂はナ、あの池で近いうちに、鯉や鮒を飼ふて一儲けするつもりなんぢゃ。だから水は一滴も、融通する譯にはいかん」
（一生懸命に）
村人の代表「それぢやア、村中の稻が枯れてしまひますだ。私共が 今まで、一粒のお米でも、お國のためにふやさうとして來た苦勞 が、水の泡となってしまひますだ。旦那、そこのところを、一つ、 お汲みとり願って―」
（冷淡に）
源兵衞「いや、何といっても、あの明神池が儂の所有である以上、 兎や角皆の指圖は受けん!」
源兵衞さんは、何んとしても聽入れてくれません。
(ぬ く)

Card 16
十七、村人の激昂
この事を聽くと、村の人達は、口々に、叫びました。
（さもにくいと云ふ 感情をこめて）
人非人! 鬼畜生!
（言調を强く）
――明神池へ押掛けろ。さうして、池の堰門をブッ壞すんだ! 殺氣立った人々は、鋤鍬を手にく、今にも、繰り出さうとしました。その時、
（可愛らしく呼びか けるやうに）
「おぢさん達、鳥渡待って下さい!」
(早くぬく)

Card 17
十八、了念の熱辯
振返ると、それは、今かけつけて來た極樂寺の了念、その後に は三吉母子がゐます。了念は小さい手を振りながら――
（息をはづませて）
了念 「呼び留めて濟みません。源兵衞さんの若旦那に、たった今 召集令が下ったんですよ」
（驚いた風に）
人々「えッ!源兵衞の……」 人々は、あッと息を吞みました。
（凛々しく强く）
了念 「おぢさん達が、源兵衞さんの仕打ちに腹を立てるのは、無理はないんですが、源兵衞の若旦那は、天皇陛下のお召しに預ったんですよ。
(少し間)
それにねえ、いつか、三ちゃんを火の中から救って下さったのは、源兵衞さんの若旦那だったんですッて……。だからおぢさん、 源兵衞さんは、勘辨してやって下さい」
了念や三吉母子の熱心な賴に、村の人々の憎しみは、段々消えて行ました。
(ぬきながら)
そして……。

十九、出征
（調子を朗らかに）
さあ、今日は源兵衞さんの若旦那源一郞上等兵の盛大な歡送です。
（大きく賑やかに）
「ばんざアーい、ばんざアーい」
日の丸の小旗を振りながら、天にも轟けと村人達が連呼する、 その萬歲の聲を耳元に聞く、源兵衞さんの心持は、呆してどんなでしたでせうか。
(少し間)
（靜かに）
その、翌朝早く――。

二十、三吉の報せ
（小供ッぽくどなる）
今はすっかり足の傷の、なほった三吉が、まだねむってゐる村を大聲で起して廻ってゐるのです。
（いぶかしげに）
「一體、何んだらう」
人々は、急いで明神池の方へ走って行きました。
と、――
(早くぬく)
三吉「お一い、皆、早く起きて明神池へ、行って御覽よオ――!」 と云ふ叫聲がします。見れば、

二十一、源兵衛改悛
（驚いたやうに）
あッ! 源兵衞が、堰門を開けてゐる!
今しも勢よく、さし昇る朝日を全身に浴びて、あの强慾の源兵衞さんが、明神池の堰門を力一杯押し開けてゐるではありませんか!
（光景を描寫するやうに演出する）
滿々と湛へられた水は一齊に、どっと田に溢れ出し、枯れかかってゐた稻は、みるみる生氣を取り戾し、そよ吹く朝風に心地よく靡き始めました。
我が子に示された、あの村人達の、熱い愛國の心、慾深源兵衞 も、今は一變して、村の爲に盡さうと決心したのです。
（明るく朗らかに）
おゝ、明けゆく村の、薔薇色の空一杯に擴がる、力强い大政翼 贊の歌――

2, RICE PLANTING

NARRATOR (continued)
This is the countryside, far away from the capital. The villagers here are working hard to increase rice production by even a single grain.
Sankichi was playing in the field with his friends, but he paused to think while watching the busy villagers.
(A short pause)

SANKICHI
(Talking to himself, in a childlike voice)
I too am a young Japanese citizen. I shouldn't be playing around…I need to do something for the country.

Card 2
3, LAND RECLAMATION

NARRATOR
Thus, Sankichi began consulting with a young monk named Ryonen at Gokuraku temple and his friends about land reclamation.

SANKICHI
(Excitedly like a child)
We children will do as well as the adults. Let's cultivate good land!

NARRATOR
The children are all working hard during their break from studies. Some uproot tree roots in this barren land, others carry stones on a trolley.
Soon, Sankichi realized it was already evening.

SANKICHI
(Worriedly like a child)
Mr. Ryonen, it's getting dark. If you don’t go back to the temple and strike the bell, the priest will scold you.

NARRATOR
Ryonen pulled up his sleeves as he carried stones.

RYONEN
(In a childlike manner)
Ah, that's right.

(As you pull the slide)

NARRATOR
The sun is setting quietly again today.

4, VILLAGE NIGHT FALLS

NARRATOR (continued)
Those who return home after working and sweating respectably in the fields have a happy family dinner and happily go to sleep, swearing to work hard again the next day.
Thus, the peaceful village night fell quietly, with the hollow sounds of owls in the forest of the village temple.
(A short pause)
(Change the tone)
In the middle of the night,

5, FIRE

NARRATOR (continued)
Ryonen woke up to go to the bathroom; the sky in the east was becoming blurrily bright.

Ryonen
(Speaking to himself suspiciously)
Hmmm. Already daybreak?

NARRATOR
However, after taking a closer look,

RYONEN
Ah! Fire! Emergency! Fire!

NARRATOR
Ryonen shouted as he jumped down to the garden.

6, SANKICHI'S HOUSE ON FIRE

NARRATOR (continued)
(The sound of a fire bell)
Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding
(In a strong tone)
Ryonen hurriedly and frantically climbed up the fire tower.
To his surprise, the house that was burning was Sankichi's. The villagers, who had been peacefully sleeping, jumped outside, shocked and flustered.

VILLAGERS
Where is the fire?
VILLAGERS
San-chan's house.
VILLAGERS
Let's go!

7, A DARK SHADOW

NARRATOR
Sankichi's house was burning in a fire that seemed to scorch even the heavens. Sparks were falling like rain. The villagers who came to the rescue started putting out the fire earnestly. Suddenly,

SANKICHI'S MOTHER
(In a panicked and sad tone)
Please help Sankichi…Sankichi …Sankichi…

NARRATOR
Sankichi's mother was running and shouting frantically.
A dark shadow jumped into the fire.

8, RESCUING SANKICHI

A YOUNG MAN
Sankichi-kun, you're alright now. Wake up!

NARRATOR
A brave young man miraculously rescued Sankichi out of the blazing fire.
(In a delighted tone)

SANKICHI'S MOTHER
Oh, Sankichi!

NARRATOR
His ecstatic mother and the villagers excitedly ran to the two.

(As you pull the slide)

NARRATOR (continued)
However, their happiness didn't last long.

Card 8
9, TO THE DOCTOR

NARRATOR
(Sorrowfully)
Sadly, unconscious Sankichi was seriously burnt.

SANKICHI’S MOTHER
(Screaming)
Sankichi! Sankichi! Wake up! It’s your mother.

NARRATOR
His mother frantically shook Sankichi’s body.

VILLAGERS
Ma’am, Sankichi is seriously injured. You’re wasting time, you need to take him to a doctor now.

NARRATOR
They quickly carried Sankichi to the doctor.
(A short pause)
(Change the tone)

VILLAGERS
Who on earth rescued San-chan?

NARRATOR
For the first time, the villagers' thoughts turned to that brave young man.

10, A REMOTE ROOM OF THE GOKURAKU TEMPLE

NARRATOR (continued)
Sankichi and his mother found temporary lodging at the Gokuraku temple's private room, after experiencing this unexpected disaster and losing their house. The village doctor is puzzled as Sankichi's injury is unexpectedly severe.

DOCTOR
(Worriedly)
If we don't do anything, he will become handicapped.
He should have a major surgery done at the town hospital.
We cannot treat him fully in this rural community.

SANKICHI'S MOTHER
(In a bewildered tone)
What shall I do?

NARRATOR
She is worried about their financial situation.

11, GENBEI'S RESIDENCE

NARRATOR
(In a strong tone)
Out of good ideas, Sankichi's mother finally decided to go to the village's richest man Genbei to request a loan for her beloved son.

SANKICHI'S MOTHER
(Desperately)
I'm in a critical situation, my beloved Sankichi may become handicapped. Please lend me some money for a while.

GENBEI
(In a greedy tone)
I'm sorry to hear about that.
However, I charge high interest and demand strict repayment.
It's going to be too harsh for you, a single woman.
I'm sorry, but I have to decline.

NARRATOR
Sankichi’s mother was disappointed at his straight refusal. However,

Card 11
12, VILLAGE SCHEDULED MEETING

NARRATOR
That evening the priest appealed to the villagers about the miserable situation of Sankichi and his mother at the village's scheduled meeting at Gokuraku temple.

PRIEST
(In a strong and persuasive tone)
As I explained, Sankichi will become handicapped without our help. How could I watch this silently as a compatriot of this fine Japanese citizen? Saving Sankichi is akin to protecting the Emperor's baby.
Why don't we all fulfill this duty?

NARRATOR
Everyone was very moved. Suddenly someone jumped out in front of the priest and offered money.

13, OLD WOMAN SHIMO

NARRATOR (continued)
It was the village’s hardworking old woman, Shimo.

OLD WOMAN SHIMO
These are my life savings, although the amount is not much.
I was going to buy government bonds to be of service to the country.
(In a sincere tone)
As I listened to the priest, I realized it would be the same thing as spending the money on poor San-chan.
Please see to it that he'll recover fully.

NARRATOR
The villagers, who were impressed by the old woman, vowed to follow her example and be frugal like her.

14, DROUGHT

NARRATOR (continued)
(Change the tone)
Before they knew it, hot mid-summer arrived. The rice that the villagers made a tremendous effort to grow was suffering under the sizzling sun. The water of the rice fields had dried up, and the rice was withering. What should they do?

15, MYOJIN POND

NARRATOR (continued)
(In a slightly firmer tone)
In this desperate situation, the village did not have a choice but to open the sluice gate at Myojin pond at the village border. Inconveniently, the pond belongs to the greedy Genbei.
(A short pause)
(Strongly)
However, the villagers could no longer wait.
(As you pull the slide)
They selected representatives to negotiate with Genbei.

Card 15
16, A PLEA

GENBEI
(In a hateful tone)
No way.
I'm planning to make money by raising carp in the pond.
So, I cannot share a single drop of water with you.

VILLAGER REPRESENTATIVE
But then all the rice in the village will dry up.
Our efforts in growing every grain of rice for the country will be wasted.
Sir, please, please accept our plea.

GENBEI
(In a cold tone)
No matter what you tell me, as long as the Myojin pond belongs to me, I will never take orders from you!

NARRATOR
Genbei would not listen to the villagers.

17, VILLAGERS' RAGE

NARRATOR (continued)
As soon as the villagers heard about it, each of them shouted.

VILLAGERS
(In a loathing tone)
Inhumane!
Savage!
(In a strong tone)
Let's gather at the Myojin pond.
Let's destroy the sluice!

NARRATOR
The agitated villagers were ready to go out with plows and picks in their hands.
Then,

VOICE
(Calling out in a sweet voice)
Uncles, please wait for a second!

18, RYONEN’S PASSIONATE EXPLANATION

NARRATOR
When the villagers looked back, they saw Ryonen of Gokuraku temple, Sankichi, and his mother running towards them. Ryonen waved his small hand.

RYONEN
(Out of breath)
I apologize for having to stop you.
Genbei’s son just received a draft order.

VILLAGERS
(In a surprised tone)
What! Genbei’s…

NARRATOR
The villagers caught their breath.

RYONEN
(In a manly and robust tone)
You have reason to be angry with Genbei.
However, Genbei’s son received a call from the Emperor.
(A short pause)
And you know, the man who rescued San-chan from the fire was Genbei’s son.
So please, forgive Genbei.

NARRATOR
The villagers’ anger gradually disappeared with this ardent plea by Ryonen, Sankichi, and his mother.

Now,

19, GOING TO THE BATTLEFIELD

NARRATOR (continued)
(In a bright tone)
Today is a grand farewell party for Private Gen’ichiro, Genbei’s son.
(In a grand, festive way)
“Banzai, banzai.”
The villagers shouted out as if to reach the heavens, while waving small Japanese flags.
What was Genbei thinking when he heard these voices shouting banzai?
(A short pause)
(Quietly)
Early the next morning,

20, SANKICHI’S REPORT

NARRATOR (continued)
(Shouting like a child)
Sankichi, whose leg injury was now completely cured, woke up the village in a loud voice.

VILLAGERS
(In a puzzled tone)
What on earth is it?

NARRATOR
The villagers ran toward the Myojin pond quickly.

(Pull the slide quickly.)

SANKICHI
Hey, everybody, get up quick, and go see the Myojin pond!

21, GENBEI'S REPENTANCE

NARRATOR
(In a surprised tone)
Wow! Genbei’s opening the sluice!
Greedy Genbei, under the rising morning sun, is opening the sluice of Myojin pond with full force!

NARRATOR (continued)
The overflowing water gushed out at once to the rice fields. The half dried rice plants quickly regained their vigor and started swinging pleasantly along with the morning breeze. Greedy Genbei now changed his mind and decided to help the village after the villagers showed such passionate patriotism to his son.
(In a bright, joyful tone)
This strong Imperial Rule Assistance Association song is sung under the rosy skies of the village at daybreak.
