This kamishibai speaks of the importance of “silent” warriors such as war dogs and war horses. Specifically, it is a story of a war horse who leaves its home to be sent off to war. On the battlefield, the horse miraculously reunites with and saves his owner, who had also been sent to the front lines.

一、幕 はじめの言葉
激しい火華を散らして戦ふ近代戦。わが皇軍の勇士たちの立派なお手柄もさることながら、それに勝るとも劣らない手柄を樹てゝ、黙々と働く無言の戦士たちがあります。

みなさん、ご存じですか。軍用犬、軍用鳩、そして軍馬。さう、さうです。今日はその勇ましい無言の戦士、軍馬のお話をいたしませ う。

Card 1
二、出征送り
「青よ、元気に往くのだぞ。」
ぱっかぱか、ぱっかぱか、ぱっかぱか……。
青の鞍には、日の丸の旗がかざられ、蹄の音が軽々と朝の大気の中に響きます。青をひいているのは茂君、ならんで歩いているのはお父さん。お国の爲に召された身は、軍馬とてかわりはありません。
「なあ、お父ちゃん、まるで健太郎兄さんを贈った時と同じだねえ。赤飯を祝って、萬歳に送られて……、青の好物の人参だけが、兄ちゃんのときより多いや。」
「は、、、おほきにな。健太郎と青の二人を出したお父ちゃんは、これで村の衆にも肩身がづーんと広くなったぞ、まづまづ目出度いこっちゃ...」
「青！僕の分まで手柄をたのむぞ。」と、茂君は青の鼻面をぴしゃぴしゃやさしくたたきました。

Card 2
三、峠の 別れ
「青! 萬歳!」
ここは村境の峠です。ここからは下り坂、お父さんだけが青に付添って町の練兵場に行くのでした。
ぱかっぱか、ぱかっぱか、次第と青の姿が木の間がくれに小さくなっていくのを見ると、茂君は堪らなくなって大声で叫びました。「青よう、さようならっ！」
それがきこえたのか、かすかにヒヒーンといななく声が、遠くの遠くでしました。茂君は泣きたくなるのをぢっと我慢しながら、滅茶苦茶に手をふりました。茂君の涙にうるんだ目には、美しい朝焼けの中にぽっちりと消えて行った青の背の日の丸の旗が、いつまでもいつまでも残りました。

Card 3
四、面会問答
それから幾日か経った或日、青がまだ町の練兵場に居るといふ噂をふと耳にしました。それを訊くと茂君はぢっとしては居られません。早速お父さんにお願ひをして、その日のうちに町に出かけて行きました。練兵場に來ると、胸をとどろかせながら、「あのう、僕ん家の青に面会させて下さい。」と、門衛の兵隊さんに頼みました。
「な、なんだって...青に面会。はは…….莫迦云っちゃいけない。何千何百頭の馬の中だ。とてもとても見つかりっこはないんだよ。な、かへり給へ。それは無駄なことだ。」
と、とり合ってくれませんでした。けれど茂君は真剣です。目に涙さえ浮かべながら、「いえ、僕、きっと見つけ出して見せます。ね、お願ひ。」
と、懸命に頼みました。

Card 4
五、柴笛に答へる嘶き
やっと許されて門の中に這入った茂君は、どこもかしこも一杯の馬に、目をみはりました。しかし茂君は平気です。とても自信のある步き方で、どんどん広場の中に這入っていきました。そして、眞中程まで來ると、立ち止まって、 傍にしげってゐる木の葉を一つとると、ピピィー、と高く吹きました。ピピィー、
また、再び鋭く鳴らしました。すると、どうでせう。こんなに沢山いる馬の中から、ヒヒーンと一声、それに答へる嘶きが起りました。
「あっ、青だっ!」
茂君は夢中になって、その嘶きの方に、どんどん駈け出しました。

Card 5
六、靑と面会
「靑! 居てくれたか! 今日はな、お前の好きなご馳走を沢山もってきて上げたぞ、ほら、これは人参だよ、それから唐黍もある。甘い甘い黒砂糖! どうだ。嬉しいかい。」と、茂君は青の首っ玉に噛りつきながら、もって来たご馳走を出してやりました。「さうさう、お前の友達にも分けてやらうな。」と、傍の軍馬たちにも分けてやりました。
「ね、青、僕が大きかったら、兄ちゃんのやうに特務兵でいい、お前の手綱をひいてやるのに。だが、それが出来ないんだ。だけど戦地には、お前の好きだった健太郎兄ちゃんがいるよ。向かうに行って、逢へたらいいんだがなア。……青、お前がここにいる間は、またご馳走を沢山もってきて上げるよ。」

けれど茂君が、つぎに青に逢いに行ったときには、もう、その懐かしい青の姿はどこにもありませんでした。

Card 6
七、雨の前進
前進、前進、また前進!
昨日も今日も雨です。健太郞特務民の属している輸送部隊は馬も人も車も、泥んこにまみれながら、難行軍を続けました。
行けども行けども泥の海です。前線が近くなるにつれて、
あちこちにぶすぶす火の燻っているところや、また主を失った放れ馬でせう。あてどもなくさまよっている哀れな姿を見ることがありました。そんなとき健太郞兄さんの眼は、その馬のうへに強く注がれるのでした。

Card 7
八、 軍馬よ、頑張れ
「それっもう一息だ、頑張れっ! 頑張ってくれ。」馬は重い車をひいたまま急な崖みちをのぼって行きます。岩と岩にはさまった車はてこでも動きません。
「これっお前も日本の軍馬だぞ。こんなことで、へたばるな! 頑張れっ!」 健太郎特務兵は涙と泥に汚れた顔をまっかにして、馬の手綱をとって必死と励ましました。馬もそれを感じたのでせう。ふるひ立った馬は、ヒヒ—ンと一声、前脚をがっと立てると、最後の力をふりしぼって、立ち上がりました。おお、次の 瞬間には、車は見事にひきあげられていました。
「萬歳!」
「よくぞやった!」
車にしがみついていた兵士たちは思はず大きく叫びました。そしてまた前進がつづきます。この辛難、この苦勞、戦場では人も馬もいったいなのです。

Card 8
九、歩哨線
雨があがりました。初めて露営の夜に、月を見ること が出来ました。
ピピイ—、ピイ—ッ
健太郎兄さんは、月に向かって柴笛を吹きました。
「こらっ! 誰かっ!」
「はっ」
步哨の銃剣が、きらりと光りました。「なんだ、君か。ここは戦線が近いのだぞ。笛なぞ吹いてくれては困るぢゃないか。」
「はァ、すみません。気づかんことをしました。弟の奴が手紙をよこしまして、青が出征してると書いてあったもんですから…」
「ほう、青と柴笛か。…....それは一体どんな関係があるんだね、君。」
「いやァ、青がどっかに居るやうな気がしましたので...。あれは、 私の柴笛をよく知っていてくれるのです。」
「さうか...。だが、大陸は広いんだ。諦め給へ、君! 明日は早い。かへって 寝るんだね。」

Card 9
一〇、決死の前進
健太郎特務兵は、少数の戦友と選ばれて、最前線まで 弾薬を連ぶ命令を受けました。めいめい弾薬箱を背負って、決死の前進を続けました。はげしく撃ち合ふ小銃、機関銃の音が耳をさくばかりです。流れ弾が無数に飛んで来ます。
「がんばれ。第一線はすぐだ。敗惨兵に気をつけろ。まだうようよしてゐると いふ話だぞ。」
戦友はお互ひに励まし合ひ、戒めあひながら、歩一歩と強行前進をつづけました。と、突然!
前面にあたって、ばばんと激しい銃声が起りました。
「敵だ、敗惨兵だぞ。」
「何くそ、あれしきの敵。」
「さうだ、敵陣突破して、強行前進あるのみだ。」

Card 10
一一、敵線突破
味方は銃を持たない特務兵、しかし、我れには大和魂があります。各自が腰の短剣を抜くと、まっしぐらに敵の銃火の中を潜って、当たるを幸ひ、なぎ倒し切り倒し、 前進に前進、敵の密集点を突破しました。
健太郎特務兵は、まっさきを駈けております。ぶるんぶるん、手にもった棒が、風に唸り、地にくだけ、その鋭い勢ひに敵は見る見る四散していきました。

Card 11
一二、消える柴笛
ビューン!
駈けていた健太郎特務兵は、もんどりうって倒れました。
「しまった!」唸きながら立ち上らうとしましたが、よほどの深傷だったでせう。僅かに身を動かしたきり、もう起き上る気力がありませんでした。こんこんと深い死の眠りの底に落ちていきます。閉じた眼から、涙がぽろっと一條、頬に伝って流れました。
彼の手はかすかに動きました。手にはしっかと一枚の葉が握られました。やがてその手が、唇に触れました。ああ、最後の努力が、大陸に逢ひ見ることの出来ぬ青を呼ぶ柴笛となって無意識に吹き鳴らされているではありませんか。ピピピー、かすかにそれが音となって流れました。

Card 12
一三、夕焼けの果て
ピピピピ―
深い夕焼けの野末に、かすかに鳴った柴笛。何もないと思はれたこの野末に、ふっと耳をそばたてたものがありました。その身も傷き倒れてゐた一頭の軍馬です。ヒヒーン、
軍馬は悲しい嘶きを立てて、よろよろと超き上らうとしましたが、力がないのでせう。またぐったりと倒れてしまひました。赤い赤い夕焼空だけが、野末の果てに美しく輝いてをります。
（静かに静かに抜く）

Card 13
一四、野戦病院
健太郎特務兵は、深い昏睡からさめて、ふっと目を開きました。そこは野の末ではありませんでした。「あっ、自分はどうしてここに...」ここは明るい陽の照る野戦病院の一室です。傷ついた戦友たちの顔がみえます。「山川! 気が付いたか。お前は偉い命拾ひをやったぞ。」軍医殿が笑って立っていました。「軍医どの、私は私は...」山川と呼ばれた健太郎特務兵は、言葉がつまってあとは云へませんでした。「はっは、訳が訊きたいのだらう。まあ、待て、今に解るときが来る。逢わせてやるものがあるからそれを楽しみに待ってゐるのだな。」

Card 14
一五、逢ふ日
「貴様ァ、驚くな。」
戦友の肩にささえられて、病院の庭に降りた健太郎特務兵の目は、大きな期待に輝いてをりました。やっと起き上がれるやうになったのです。今日は軍医殿に許されて命を助けて貰ったといふその恩人に逢へる日なのでした。
「そのお方はどこにおいでですか、早く逢はせて下さい。」「はっは、さう急ぐな。おっと、危ない。駄目ぢゃないか。しっかりつかまっとれ、なにしろ、世界でも珍らしい命の恩人ぢゃからなァ...」
ヒヒィンー。どこかで馬の嘶く声が高くしました。
「ほうら、君の恩人が、お侍ち兼ねのご様子だ。呼んでるぞう。」

Card 15
一六、あっ、青!
「あつ、青! お前か、」
健太郎は一目見るなり、馬の首っ玉に噛り付きました。あ、それはなんといふ嬉しい偶然でせう。夢にも見た青の姿でありました。
「青! 青……。」
健太郎は泣きました。馬も泣きました。
「ああ、救ってくれたと云ふのは、この……この馬でしたか。」
「さうだ。これは……どうしたと云ふのだ、貴様の知ってる馬か。」
「はいっ、知ってるにも何にも、私の家の馬です。青、青っ！お前がなァ…」
「さうか。さうだったか。戦場は、人間の考へ及ばないことを我々の前に見せてくれる。山川! この馬はな、傷いた身で、貴様を銃火のふる中をよろめきよろめき 運んでくれたのだぞ、貴様も馬も、ひどい深傷だった。しかし、どちらも今は傷が直った。貴様が、再び前線に立てる日が来たなら、隊長どのに願って、貴様の馬に頂くがいい。」
「有難うございます。私は青から離れることではありません。」
健太郎特務兵が、再び元気な姿で、青と前線にゆく日も近いでせう。戦ひはこれからだ。さう、戰ひはこれからなのです。
さぁみなさん。私たちも元気に、愛馬を讃へる愛馬進軍歌を歌はふではありませんか。はい、一、二、三!

1, SCENE: OPENING WORDS

NARRATOR
Modern warfare is fought under a fierce shower of sparks. It goes without saying that the achievements of the brave warriors of our Imperial Army are splendid, but there are those mute warriors working in silence whose achievements rival or surpass these.
Everyone, do you know who they are? War dogs, carrier pigeons, and warhorses. Yes, that’s right. Today we shall tell a story of this brave and silent warrior, the war horse.

(Pull out slide.)

Card 1
2, SENDING OFF TO BATTLE

SHIGERU
Ao, stay healthy and well.

NARRATOR
Clop clop clop.
The flag of the rising sun was attached to Ao’s saddle, and the sound of his hooves echoed lightly in the morning air. Shigeru-kun is leading Ao, and next to him is his father. Those summoned for the sake of the country are equal, whether human or horse.

SHIGERU
Hey Dad, this is exactly like the time we sent off big brother Kentaro. We ate sekihan (celebratory red rice) and sent him off shouting banzai… The only difference is that this time, we had a lot more of Ao’s favorite food, carrots!

DAD
Ha… very much so. With Kentaro and Ao both serving in the war, Dad can walk among the villagers with pride, how joyous indeed…

SHIGERU
Ao! Fight hard in my place,

NARRATOR
Shigeru said as he gently slapped Ao’s nose.

Card 2
3, FAREWELL ON THE MOUNTAIN PASS

SHIGERU
Ao! Banzai!
NARRATOR
This is the mountain pass that borders the village. From here the path slopes downward, and Ao’s father alone will accompany Ao to the parade grounds in the city.
Clop clop clop. Shigeru-kun watched as Ao’s form became smaller and smaller amidst the trees and, unable to hold back, he shouted,

SHIGERU
Ao! Farewell!

NARRATOR
A faint “Neigh!” could be heard from far, far away, as if Ao had heard Shigeru-kun’s voice. Shigeru-kun held back the urge to cry as he waved his hands wildly. Shigeru-kun’s eyes became blurry with tears, but the image of the rising sun flag on Ao’s back as he disappeared into the beautiful sunrise lingered in his teary eyes.

Card 3
4, ASKING FOR A MEETING

NARRATOR
A few days later, Shigeru-kun heard a rumor that Ao was still at the city’s parade grounds. Hearing this, Shigeru-kun could not sit still. He immediately got permission from his father and headed to the city that day. When he arrived at the grounds, he asked the gatekeeper, his heart pounding,

SHIGERU
Um, please let me meet my horse, Ao.

GATEKEEPER
Huh, what? A meeting with Ao? Don’t be silly. There are thousands of horses here. There’s no way you can find your horse. Come, go home now. It’s useless.

NARRATOR
The gatekeeper showed no sign of yielding. However Shigeru-kun is serious.

SHIGERU
No, I know I will be able to find him. Please?

NAARATOR
He pleaded earnestly.

(Pull out slide.)

Card 4
5, RESPONDING TO THE GRASS WHISTLE

NARRATOR
Finally, Shigeru-kun was allowed inside, and was amazed. There were horses everywhere he looked. But, Shigeru-kun was fine. He walked through the grounds with a very confident gait. Once he reached near the middle of the grounds, he stopped, took a leaf from a nearby tree from a thickly growing grove, and blew. A high-pitched whistle sounded.
Then, again, a sharp whistle. And wouldn’t you know it. Out of all of these horses, one horse let out a “Neigh!” in response.

SHIGERU
Oh! It’s Ao!

NARRATOR
Shigeru began running towards the voice.

(Pull out slide quickly.)

Card 5
6, MEETING WITH AO

SHIGERU
Ao! You’re here! Here, today I brought you a feast. See, here’s some carrots, and corn. And sweet, sweet brown sugar! How is it? Are you happy?

NARRATOR
Shigeru clung to Ao’s neck and took out the feast that he had brought with him.

SHIGERU
Oh, I should share with your friends too.

NARRATOR
Shigeru said as he shared the food with the other warhorses.

SHIGERU
You know Ao, if I were older, I don’t mind being just a special service officer like big brother, as long as I could hold your reins. But, I can’t do that. But big brother Kentaro, whom you love so much, is out on the battlefield. I hope you can see him once you’re out there… Ao, as long as you’re here, I’ll visit you again with lots of food.

(Pull out slide halfway)

NARRATOR
However the next time Shigeru-kun visited, his beloved Ao was nowhere to be seen.

(Pull out slide quietly.)

Card 6
7, ADVANCING IN THE RAIN

NARRATOR
Advance, advance, and advance again.
It has been raining since yesterday. Special forces officer Kentaro’s transportation corps continued their difficult march, with horse, human, and cart covered in mud.
No matter how far they went, it was a sea of mud. As they approached the front lines, they passed smoldering fires and pitiful, wandering horses who must have lost their owners. And every time they passed such a sight, Kentaro’s eyes became fixed on these horses.

(Pull out slide.)

Card 7
8, HANG IN THERE, WAR HORSE

SOLDIER
There, just a little more, hang in there!

NARRATOR
The horse pulled a heavy cart up a steep path along a cliff. The cart was stuck between two rocks and would not budge.

KENTARO
Come on, you’re a warhorse of Japan. Don’t give up in a place like this! Keep going!

NARRATOR
Special forces officer Kentaro’s face was red and covered in mud and tears as he pulled the horse’s reins and desperately encouraged it. The horse must have sensed this. Encouraged, it whinnied and raised its front legs, and, mustering the last of its strength, stood up. Oh! The next moment, the cart was being pulled back up the path.

SOLDIERS
Banzai!

SOLDIERS
Great work!

NARRATOR
The soldiers who had been hanging onto the cart shouted loudly despite themselves, and now, they once again advance. On this battlefield amidst the hardship and pain, man and horse are one in the same.

(Pull out slide.)

Card 8
9, SENTRY LINE

NARRATOR
It rained. On their first night at the camp, the moon came out.
Whistle, whistle.
Big brother Kentaro blew a grass whistle at the moon.

GUARD
Hey! Who’s there!

KENTARO
Ah!

NARRATOR
The guard’s bayonet glistened.

GUARD
Oh, it’s you. We’re near the front lines here. We can’t have you whistling like that.

KENTARO
Oh, sorry. I wasn’t thinking. My younger brother wrote to me saying Ao has gone off to war…

GUARD
Huh, Ao and grass whistles… I’m not seeing the connection.

KENTARO
Ah, I just felt like Ao might be nearby… That horse knows the sound of my grass whistle well.

GUARD
I see… But this land is vast. Give it up! We’re getting up early tomorrow so go get some sleep.

(Pull out slide quietly.)

Card 9
10, ADVANCING IN THE FACE OF DEATH

NARRATOR
Special forces officer Kentaro was one of the chosen few who, along with his comrades, was ordered to carry ammunition to the front lines. Each of them carried a box of ammunition on his back and continued advancing in the face of death. Rifles violently shot at each other, and the sound of machine guns filled their ears. Stray bullets rained down.

SOLDIER
Keep going. The front lines are right there. Be careful of scattered enemy troops. I hear this area is still swarming with them.

NARRATOR
The fellow soldiers encouraged and commanded one other as, step by step, they forced their way forward. Then, suddenly!
From the front, there was the loud “bang!” of a gunshot.
SOLDIER
It’s the enemy, it’s the defeated troops!

SOLDIER
This is nothing, dang it.

SOLDIER
That’s right, break through the enemy lines and let’s force our way forward.

(Pull out slide quickly.)

Card 10
11, BREAKING THROUGH THE ENEMY LINES

NARRATOR
Our allies are special forces officers who have no guns. But, we have the Yamato spirit. Each one pulled out the sword at their hips, ducked straight through enemy fire, beating any opponent who came across their paths, throwing and cutting down, advancing, advancing; and tore through the densest spot in the enemy lines.
Officer Kentaro was at the very front. Swing, swing, the sword in his hand howled in the wind, smashed through the earth, and with its piercing force scattered the enemy in front of everyone’s eyes.

Card 11
12, DISAPPEARING GRASS WHISTLE

NARRATOR
Whoosh! Officer Kentaro, who had been running, suddenly somersaulted to the ground and collapsed.

KENTARO
Shoot!

NARRATOR
He groaned and tried to stand, but his wound must have been deep. After lifting himself slightly, he fell back down and seemed to have no more strength to move. He began falling deep into the sleep of death. From his closed eyes, a single tear rolled down his cheek.
Kentaro’s hand moved very slightly. In it he clutched a single leaf. His hand gradually touched his lips. Ah, with his last strength he is subconsciously whistling to his Ao whom he could not meet on this large battlefield. Whistle, whistle, it sounded faintly.

(Pull out slide quietly.)

Card 12
13, BEYOND THE SUNSET

NARRATOR
Whistle whistle…
In a corner of the field in the deep twilight, the whistle sounded faintly. In a corner of the field where there seemed to be nothing, there was a being that perked up its ears. It was a warhorse whose body, too, was wounded and lying on the ground. “Neigh,” the warhorse gave a sad whinny and tried to stand on unsteady feet, but it had no strength left. It once again collapsed limply. Under the red, red sunset, the corners of the field shone beautifully.

Card 13
14, FIELD HOSPITAL

NARRATOR
Officer Kentaro awakened from a deep coma and opened his eyes. This was not a corner of the field.

KENTARO
Why am I here…

NARRATOR
This was a brightly sunlit room of the field hospital. He could see the faces of his fellow injured soldiers.

MILITARY PHYSICIAN
Yamakawa! You’re awake. You really narrowly survived.

NARRATOR
The military physician was standing with a smile on his face.

KENTARO
Doctor, I-I…

NARRATOR
Officer Kentaro, who was called Yamakawa, started to speak but became choked up.

MILITARY PHYSICIAN
Haha, you must want to know what happened. Well, just wait and you’ll see. I want you to meet someone so look forward to it.

(Pull out slide normally.)

Card 14
15, THE DAY THEY MEET

FELLOW SOLDIER
Hey you, don’t be shocked.

NARRATOR
Leaning on his comrade’s soldier, Kentaro went down to the hospital yard, his eyes shining with anticipation. He was finally able to get up. Today, he was given permission by the military physician to meet the one who saved his life.

KENTARO
Where is this gentleman, please hurry and let me see him.

FELLOW SOLDIER
Haha, don’t rush. Oops, that was close. You can’t do that. Hold on to me. You know, he is one very unique savior.

NARRATOR
“Neigh…,” a high-pitched neigh sounded from somewhere.

FELLOW SOLDIER
See, it seems your lifesaver is becoming impatient. He’s calling you.

(Pull out slide quickly.)

Card 15
16, OH, IT’S AO!

KENTARO
Oh, Ao! It’s you…

NARRATOR
Kentaro took one look at the horse and clung to its neck. What a wonderfully happy coincidence. It was the very Ao that he had dreamed of seeing.

KENTARO
Ao! Ao…

NARRATOR
Kentaro cried. The horse cried, too.

KENTARO
The one who saved me, was it… was it this horse?

FELLOW SOLDIER
That’s right. But… what is this? You know this horse?

KENTARO
Yes, not only do I know him, he’s my family’s horse. Ao, Ao! It was you…

FELLOW SOLDIER
I see. I see now. On the battlefield, we are shown things that humans would not have dreamed of. Yamakawa! This wounded horse carried you, staggering through enemy fire, both you and the horse were badly injured. However, both of you have recovered now. When you are well enough to stand on the front lines again, get the commanding officer’s permission to receive this horse as your own.

KENTARO
Thank you. I will never leave Ao’s side.

NARRATOR
The day will soon come when Officer Kentaro will once again be healthy and stand on the front lines with Ao. The fight has just begun. Yes, the fight has only just begun. Now, everyone. We, too, shall be full of spirit. Let’s sing the song of the March of our Beloved Horse. One, two, three!
