"信愛の道 Shin'ai no Michi" (Path to devotion)
Information
Date - 1941 July 15
Summary -
Genshichi, with his new assignment to manage a mining construction site in Hokkaido, overcame a plot against him by trusting his ex-convict employees and giving them responsibilities. Responding to his trust, Sengo and Kumasaburo, the worst of the ex-convicts, swore to abandon their life of crime as they helped deliver food and cash to the construction site. When the construction was complete, they were awarded for being model workers.
The moral of the story is that every citizen can be of service to the nation when they put their hearts to it.

Card 1
NARRATOR
This is a building in Tokyo. Two men are listening in front of Sakonda's office.
(Quiet dialogue)
MAN 1
Yeah, I wonder who is going to be the acting president.
MAN 2
Perhaps Noge or Genshichi.
(As you pull the slide)
MAN 1
No, it's probably Nakamura or Todoroki.
Card 2
(Continuing from the previous slide)
MAN 2
Todoroki? You must be kidding. No way that old man can manage a big construction project.
(In an upset tone)
MAN 1
What are you talking about? Temperamental Noge can’t be in charge of the difficult construction site. First of all, he doesn't have an air of importance.
MAN 2
What!
(As you pull the slide, explain)
NARRATOR
The two finally started a fierce quarrel.
Card 3
NARRATOR (continued)
In the office,
(Change the tone and explain)
President Sakonda grips his left hand, disabled by gout, with his right hand.
As he looks upon Noge, Nakamarra, Todoroki, Genshichi, and all the head accountants lined up on the left, and the executives on the right,
PRESIDENT SAKONDA
(Speak slowly and enunciate like an older man)
As you know, I have gout, and I cannot go to the North Sea mining development construction site.
I considered whom I can send on my behalf.
Since this construction requires achieving harmony among the workers, I decided to send Genshichi, who is good at managing people, and accountant Nakamura as the vice head.
(Pull slide normally.)
Card 4
NARRATOR
The night when the acting president was announced,
Accountant Todoroki invited accountant Noge and Kuroki, who was in charge of the workers, to his home.
TODOROKI
(Read the line a with a little intensity)
Unfortunately, we failed.
However, I have a good idea.
Accountant Genshichi is going to lead workers.
Among the 600 workers, let's plant 70 to 80 violent ex-convicts.
If they delay the construction, Genshichi will give up.
After that, Noge and I will take charge.
KUROKI
(As if abetting him)
That's a great idea.
Among the 70-80 criminals, who are ex-convicts, vagabonds, and construction looters, we have Sengo the Gale and his brother, Kumasaburo.
(Pull the slide quickly.)
Card 5
NOGE
Is that right?
Sengo the Gale and Kuma are already out of jail?
NARRATOR
Noge imagined Sengo the Gale with the intimidating scar on his left cheek, and his violent brother Kumasaburo, in his mind.
NOGE
(With a low tone)
So the Gale and Kuma are back then. They’ve intimidated me before too.
(Speaking to himself)
If the two ruin the construction, Genshichi would give up and run away within two months.
It's going to work.
(Pull the slide quickly.)
Card 6
NARRATOR
(Change the tone and explain in a high pitch)
This is the new mining construction site in Hokkaido. After the mountains were cleared on the plain, an office, workers’ cabin, and cranes were established.
All the workers are busy, pushing trolleys and transporting soil.
(As you pull the slide, explain)
NARRATOR (continued)
An onsite manager can be seen frequently shouting,
“Work hard!â€Â
Card 7
NARRATOR (continued)
In the office, accountants Genshichi and Nakamura were checking the workers’ roster.
GENSHICHI
(With a lot of posing for effect)
Wow. We’ve got some bad ones in this crowd.
I wonder when Sengo the Gale and Kumasaburo got out of jail.
NAKAMURA
(In a surprised tone)
Really? Sengo the Gale and Kumasaburo…If we don’t handle this well, we may have a storm ahead of us.
GENSHICHI
This roster shows 70-80 people who are known for their bad nature.
NARRATOR
The two murmured worriedly.
Then,
(Pull the slide quickly.)
Card 8
NARRATOR (continued)
(Continue from the previous slide and shout vehemently at a high pitch without a pause)
A fight! A fight!
(Explain quickly)
Genshichi and Nakamura looked down from the window, and saw about ten workers running with picks and shovels in their hands.
NAKAMURA
It’s Sengo the Gale, isn't it?
GENSHICHI
You don’t know that yet.
(Pull the slide quickly.)
Card 9
NARRATOR
(Speak rapidly without pausing)
The fight was between the pick and trolley groups. Sengo the Gale, who tried to mediate the conflict, got punched. His brother Kumasaburo was enraged and was shouting that he would get revenge for his brother.
SENGO
(In an intense and controlled tone)
Kuma, stop it!
If you lose your temper, that will be the end of the story.
I'm keeping myself under control, so never mind that.
(As you pull the slide, explain)
NARRATOR
Sengo, the older brother, repeatedly tried to calm his younger brother Kumasaburo.
Card 10
SENGO
(In a solemn tone)
Kuma, you haven't forgotten what the prison chaplain told us when we left the prison, have you?
(To the performer:
Change the tone like a prison chaplain and explain humbly while bowing at the words “children of the Emperorâ€Â)
SENGO (continued)
“You're all children of the Emperor. You should walk a path of righteousness with your courage and skills. To do so, you have to endure hardship no matter how difficult it is.â€Â
(Back to Sengo's voice)
That’s what he told us, didn't he?
(As you pull the slide)
SENGO (continued)
Then what did we say to him?
Card 11
SENGO (continued)
(Sengo's tone strongly and brightly as if speaking in front of the prison chaplain)
"We will endure, no matter how frustrating or difficult that hardship may be."
(With particular emphasis)
(To the performer: Bow when you say "the Emperor's honorable children")
"We want to be respectable Japanese citizens. We want to be the Emperor's honorable children. We may be ex-convicts, but we will be born new."
(Go back to the conversation between Sengo and Kumasaburo)
That’s what we said. And yet you get upset over a trivial thing like this.
KUMASABURO
Brother, I'm sorry.
(Pull the slide.)
Card 12
NARRATOR
(Change the speed and explain slowly.)
Sengo, known as The Gale, and The Brute Kumasaburo, who had always intimidated people, have now turned into righteous people. However, not everyone understands this.
The people watched the two depart,
(Explain as you pull the slide.)
NARRATOR (continued)
And one of those onlookers --was accountant Genshichi.
Card 13
CLERK
(Speaking quickly in a high pitch)
Accountant, we have a situation. The food and 27,000 yen in cash appear to have arrived at the station, but our truck cannot pass through due to the landslide caused by high water levels.
GENSHICHI
(An air of dismay)
That's troublesome. We need the cash and food today.
CLERK
A human would be able to barely pass through the location of the landslide.
Why don't we send 20 to 30 workers to carry the food and cash?
GENSHICHI
(In a determined tone)
Let me choose which workers will go.
I’ll send trustworthy workers.
Card 14
GENSHICHI
(In a robust and high tone as if calling out)
Hey, everyone.
Your salary, 27,000 yen in cash, and food have arrived at the station, but the truck cannot pass through because the riverbank has collapsed.
I want 20-30 people to help transport the goods and the money through the affected area.
Since it's an important job, I will appoint who is going.
Please step forward if I call you.
(Particularly strongly and slowly)
Sengo! Kumasaburo! Fumio! Yamasaku! Kanji…
NARRATOR
How unexpected! The individuals that accountant Genshichi appointed were all ex-convicts like Sengo and Kuma!
(Pull the slide quickly.)
Card 15
NARRATOR (continued)
Accountant Nakamura was surprised when he saw the 20 workers who were descending the mountain slowly.
Nakamura
(In an astounded voice)
Sengo is here.
Kuma is here, and Fumio and Kanji.
This is surprising.
Why, of all people, would you choose to send such dangerous people to do the job.
(Pull the slide quickly.)
Card 16
NARRATOR (continued)
Astounded, Nakamura complained to Genshichi, but Genshichi’s face became serious as he said,
GENSHICHI
(Enunciate slowly at a high and robust pitch.)
Mr. Nakamura, I absolutely trust them.
Humans, once trusted, are rarely able to commit a crime.
Particularly, the parents and siblings of these individuals have given up on them.
(To the performer: Humbly bow at the words, “the Emperor's childrenâ€Â)
It's our duty to support them.
After all, they are the Emperor's children.
(With particular emphasis)
They have sworn never to return to prison. What would they become if we treated them coldly? They’re trying to be respectable Japanese citizens.
Don't you think it's a mistake to discriminate against them?
NARRATOR
Nakamura had nothing to say in retaliation.
(Pull the slide quietly.)
Card 17
NARRATOR (continued)
On the truck, Sengo, Kuma, and the others in question were moved and were discussing amongst themselves.
(Perform all the dialogue in this slide in a strong, moved, and bright tone)
SENGO
Hey, everyone. This is the first time I’ve felt so delighted.
They unconditionally entrusted us with 27,000 yen in cash.
When I think about it, I have tears in my eyes.
KUMASABURO
Genshichi is a great man.
Anyone would dedicate themselves to him.
SENGO
That’s right.
When I think that there’s someone in this world who trusts me so much, I could never commit another crime and land myself back in prison.
FUMIO
I couldn't agree more. Why don’t we all swear to it right now.
(Explain in a bright tone as you pull the slide quietly)
NARRATOR
The truck that carries them runs through the plains of Hokkaido.
Card 18
NARRATOR (continued)
(Change the tone from the previous slide)
Meanwhile, in Tokyo, Todoroki is reading letters from the factory in Hokkaido.
TODOROKI
(In an surprised tone)
This could not be right. Weirdly, Sengo the Gale and Kumasaburo are working harder than anyone to become model employees.
Hey, Noge. Come see this letter.
NARRATOR
Short-tempered Noge jumped to conclusions.
NOGE
(In an enraged voice)
Hey, Todoroki. You conspired with Genshichi and played a trick on me.
How long are you planning to feign ignorance!
(Pull the slide quickly.)
Card 19
(Conversing in a hateful tone)
TODOROKI
What! I won’t forgive you if you say something so outrageous.
NOGE
Forgive me or not, I don’t care. You swindler!!
NARRATOR
Finally, the two started a fierce fight.
Just then, Noge’s innocent daughter jumped in, and the two stopped fighting.
(Pull the slide quietly.)
Card 20
NARRATOR (continued)
(In a poetic, beautiful, and quiet tone)
That summer, the vivid kagura music could be heard at the factory and the village festival in Hokkaido. Lanterns at every house were glowing like fireflies at the festival. The village children are dressed up to go to the village shrine today.
(Pull the slide quietly.)
Card 21
NARRATOR (continued)
(In a heightened tone)
Red and white drapes decorate the empty lot of the factory. A signboard at the entrance says “The Award Ceremony of Model Employees.â€Â
(In an exceptionally bright tone)
The workers are entering the ceremony site.
Among them, Sengo and Kumasaburo appear with smiles on their faces.
(Pull the slide quietly.)
Card 22
NARRATOR (continued)
President Sakonda, who came all the way from Tokyo, smiles contentedly and supports his paralyzed left hand with his right hand.
PRESIDENT SAKONDA
(Like a ceremonial reading. Add the president's accent like in slide no. 4)
Gentlemen, I'm delighted from the bottom of my heart that your passion, hard work, and effort helped accomplish this grand and difficult construction. On top of that, we can award the model employees.
Going forward, I wish you'll continue to make a wholehearted effort to be of service to industrial development.
(Pull the slide quietly.)
Card 23
NARRATOR (continued)
There was a round of applause. Sengo and Kumasaburo, who received award certificates, could not hide their overflowing joy.
SENGO
(In a moved tone)
Kuma! We’ve become respectable Japanese citizens.
I'm overjoyed.
KUMASABURO
Brother, let's try hard and proceed forever with this commitment!!
NARRATOR
(Finish explaining with a bright, strong, and passionate tone.)
A new path to devotion!
The sound of the village taiko drums echoes as if celebrating the pair as they stand firmly on the path to a bright new life.
(The end.)
