Summary

The story follows a group of children who are actively playing at being soldiers in the Japanese Imperial Army. Some have weapons, some are nurses and one is even doing logistics. They play at defeating the Americans and the British, as they are the invincible Imperial Army.

和夫さんがラッパを吹いてゐます。昭ーさんが軍刀を持って、 待ってゐます。二人で何をするのかしら? ハテナ?

(コドモたちに)

わかった?

(コドモたちに)

わからない?

さうだ! きっとさうだよ、あれをするのですよ。

ほら皆の大好きなヘイタイゴッコ。

それで和夫さんがラッパを吹いてゐるのです。あツ、向ふから誰か來ます。あ、正次さんです。

(第一の線までぬきながら)

(戦車のひびきを口真似で) ゴウ ゴウ ゴウ ゴウ (第一の線でとめる) 正次さんが 三輪車に乘って來ましたよ。

(正次)「僕は戰車兵だよ。」 あら、又誰か來ます。

あ、竹馬に乗ってくるのは誰かしら？

Card 1
正男さんです。
竹馬の上から正男さんが大きな声で、

(正男)「樸は騎兵だよッ。」と いいました。

さア、三輪車に乗った正次さんはなに兵でしたか?

(コドモたちの答えを待って)

さう、戰車兵です、少年戰車兵ですね。
では、竹馬に乘ってゐる正男さんは?

(コドモたちの答えを待って)

さうてす、騎兵です。
おや、勇さんも來ました。

(第一の線までぬいてとめる)　

勇さんは鐵砲をかついで、 (勇)「僕は、歩兵だよ」と いひました。

(第ニの線までぬいてとめる)

それから、 太郎さんは竹の筒を持って

(太郎)「僕は砲兵だよ。」といひました。

(残りをぬきながら) 次郎さんは小さい圓匙を持って

(次郎)「僕は工兵だよ」 といひました。

Card 2
鐵砲をかついだ勇さんはなに兵ですか?

(コドモたちの答を待って)

さうネ。勇さんは 歩兵です。竹の筒を持った太郎さんは?

(コドモたちの答を待って)

太郎さんは砲兵ですね。 小さい圓匙を持った次郎さんは?

(コドモたちの答を待って)

さうです、工兵です。 あら、又誰が來ましたよ。

(第一の線までぬいてとめる) あらツ、模型滑空機を持っている!

秋男さんです。

(秋男)「僕は航空兵だよ。」

(第ニの線までぬいてとめる)
おやおや、お次ぎは ー郎さんだ。何か ひっぱって來ましたよ。

(殘リをぬきながら)

あとから花子さんとユリ子さんも来ました。あ、一郎さんは、自動車をひつぱって來たのです。

(一郎) 「僕は輜重兵だよ。」

花子さんとユり子さんは

(花子、ユリ子)「私たちは看護婦になりませう。」 と、いひました。

短い間

さア、模型滑空機を持った秋男さんは

なに兵ですか?

(コドモたちの答を待って)

航空兵、いゝなア、少年航空兵ですよ。
では自動車をひいてゐる一郎さんは?

(コドモたちの答を待って)

輜重兵。自動車で弾丸や、兵隊さんの食べ物を運ぶ...これも大切なお役目です。

花子さんとユリ子さんは?

(コドモたちの答を待って)

看護婦。怪我した兵隊さんや病氣の兵隊さんを親切にお世話して上げる看護婦さん。これで皆 揃ひました。

お待兼の ヘイダイゴッコを始めませう。
(号令) (三段に区切ってぬきながら)

「気をつけ!
右へならへ!
なをれ!」

Card 4
部隊長は一番お兄さんの昭一さんです。

(昭一部隊長)
「僕たちはアメリカやイギリスの子なんかに决して負けない、つよい日本の少國民部隊だ。
まづ、偵察機を飛ばして 敵の様子をさぐらう。
秋男航空兵は すぐに 飛行機を飛ばして さぐれ。」

(秋男航空兵)「はいッ、複誦、秋男航空兵は すぐ飛行機を飛ばして敵の様子をさぐります。
終りッ。」

ブン、ブン、ブン、ブン、ブンと飛べ。

Card 5
僕らの荒鷲 ブンと飛べ。太平洋もーまたぎ、 ブンブン飛んでアメリカのル—ズベルトを，やツつけろ!

(昭一部隊長)

「よしッ。敵の様子はわかつたぞ。す、めッ!」

(はやくぬきながら) (みんなの声)

「わアツ——」

カタカタ カタカタ パンポンパンポン 兵隊ごっこ。

カタカタカタカタ パンポンパンポン 僕らは つよい。 カタカタ カタカタ パンポンパンポンす、めよ す、め 樸らは つよい 日木の子ども。 ポチもーしょに飛んでゆく。

(ぬきながら) カタカタ カタカタ パンポンパンポン

あッ。前に川があります。

川があります。

どうしませう。

ね、本当に川があるのに どうしませう。 あツ。

(ぬきながら) 飛びました、 飛びました。

(昭一部隊長) 「それッ，敵前渡河だぞ。
皆、 ころぶなッ。」

(太郎)「ようしッ、大丈夫だッ」

(勇)「平氣、平氣!」

(昭一部隊長) 「花子さんも ユリ子さんも，大丈夫かい?」 (花子)「え、私たちも平氣.よ、ね、ユリ子さん。」

(ユり子)
「さうよ、日木の少国民ですもの。」

(和夫)
「さうだとも。日本の少園民だもの。この位の川.平気で飛びこすよ。」
(ぬきながら) カタカタ カタカタ パンポンパンポン

うて うて 米英うちまかせ。

そら そら 敵がにげ出した。
いまだぞ、 もっと 、うちまくれ。

(花子)「勇さん、これでいいかしら？」
(勇) 「花子さん、有難う」

(ユリ子) 「いたくない? 勇さん。」

(勇)「いたくないさ、この位。
はやくしてよ、皆と一緒に突撃だ。」

(コドモたちに話しかけるように)

おや、 何か音がしますよ。 みんな、耳をじいっと澄ませて 、聞いて御覧。
（ほらほらほら) 音がするでせう?
きこえてくるでせう?

(大きく) (ばくおん
あッ、爆音だッ。

(はやくぬく)

(皆で)
「ばんざアい、はんざアい。」 銀の翼に日の丸の本當の飛行機が飛んで 來て 少國民部隊の大勝利です。
皆、大きな声で、揃って萬歳を叫びました。

(皆で)
「ばんざアい、ばんざアい。無敵皇軍萬歳!」(終)

(Trumpet sounds, to a random melody.)

Toot-toot, toot-toot
Kazuo-san is blowing a trumpet. Shoichi-san is waiting with a military sword. I wonder what they are going to do. Hmm.

(To the children)

Did you figure it out?

(To the children)

Don’t know?
Yes! It must be that, that’s what they are going to do.
There, soldier play, the game everyone loves.
That’s why Kazuo-san is blowing a trumpet.
Oh, there is someone heading here from a distance.
Oh, it’s Masaji-san.

(Start pulling out slide to the first line)
(Mimicking the sound of a tank)

Vroom vroom vroom vroom.

(Stop at the first line)

Masaji-san is heading over on his tricycle.

MASAJI
I’m a tankman!

NARRATOR
Oh my, someone else is coming. Oh, who is that heading over on stilts?

Card 1
NARRATOR (continued)
Here is Masao-san. Masao-san calls out from on top of his stilts. He says,

MASAO
I’m a cavalryman.

NARRATOR
Now, what kind of soldier is Masaji-san on his tricycle?

(Wait for the children’s response)

NARRATOR (continued)
Yes, he’s a tankman, a young tankman.
And what was Masao-san on the stilts?

(Wait for the children’s response)

NARRATOR (continued)
Yes, a cavalryman.
Oh my, Isamu-san is coming too.

(Pull out to the first line and stop)

NARRATOR (continued)
Isamu-san is carrying a gun, and says,

ISAMU
I’m an infantryman.

(Pull out to the second line and stop)

NARRATOR
Then, Taro-san, holding a bamboo gun barrel, says,

TARO
I’m an artilleryman.

(As you pull out the rest)

NARRATOR
Jiro-san holds a small shovel and says

JIRO
I’m a military engineer.

NARRATOR
What was Isamu-san with the gun?

(Wait for the children’s response)

NARRATOR (continued)
Yes. Isamu-san is an infantryman. What about Taro-san with his bamboo gun barrel?

(Wait for the children’s response)

NARRATOR (continued)
Taro-san is an artilleryman, right. What about Jiro-san with the small shovel?

(Wait for the children’s response)

NARRATOR (continued)
That’s right, a military engineer. Oh, someone is coming again.

(Pull out to the first line and stop)

NARRATOR (continued)
Oh my, he’s holding a model sailplane! It’s Akio-san.

AKIO
I’m a fighter pilot!

(Pull out to the second line and stop)

NARRATOR
Goodness, next is Ichiro-san. He’s pulling something.

(As you pull out the rest)

NARRATOR (continued)
Behind him are Hanako-san and Yuriko-san. Oh, Ichiro-san was pulling a car behind him.

ICHIRO
I’m from the Transportation Corps!

HANAKO, YURIKO
We shall be nurses.

NARRATOR
They say.
(Short pause)
Now, what kind of soldier was Akio-san with his model sailplane?

(Wait for the children’s response)

NARRATOR (continued)
A fighter pilot, how nice, he’s a fighter pilot. Then what about Ichiro-san with his automobile?

(Wait for the children’s response)

NARRATOR (continued)
The Transportation Corps. Carrying bullets, and food for the soldiers by car…this is an important role too. What about Hanako-san and Yuriko-san?

(Wait for the children’s response)

NARRATOR (continued)
Nurses. Nurses who gently take care of soldiers who are hurt or sick. Now everyone has assembled. Let us begin the long-awaited game of soldier play.

(Call to order. Pull out in three parts)

NARRATOR (continued)
Attention!
Follow the person to your right!
Return to position!

NARRATOR (continued)
The commanding officer is the eldest of the group, Shoichi-san.

COMMANDING OFFICER SHOICHI
We are the strong children’s corp of Japan, who would never lose to kids in the United States or Great Britain.
First, let’s fly a reconnaissance plane and investigate the state of our enemies.
Fighter pilot Akio, immediately fly your plane and do reconnaissance.

FIGHTER PILOT AKIO
Roger, repeat, fighter pilot Akio will immediately fly a plane to do reconnaissance. Over.

NARRATOR
Buzz buzz buzz buzz hum and fly.

(Pull out slide.)

NARRATOR (continued)
Our warbird, hum and fly.
Cross the Pacific in a single stride, buzz buzz fly and defeat Roosevelt of the United States!

COMMANDING OFFICER SHOICHI
Good. Now we know the situation of our enemies. Advance!

(As you pull out the slide quickly)

EVERYONE
Ahhhhhhhhh!

NARRATOR
Clatter clatter, bang bang soldier play.

Clatter clatter, bang bang we are strong.

Clatter clatter, bang bang advance, advance, we are strong children of Japan. Our pup joins us too as we fly forward.

Oh, there is a river in front of us.
There is a river.
What shall we do?
Hey, there is an actual river, what shall we do?
Oh.

He jumped, he jumped.

COMMANDING OFFICER SHOICHI
There, a river crossing in the face of the enemy.
Everyone, don’t fall.

TARO
Alright, no problem.

ISAMU
We’re fine, we’re fine.

COMMANDING OFFICER SHOICHI
Hanako-san and Yuriko-san, you’re alright too?

HANAKO
Yes, we are fine. Right, Yuriko-san?

YURIKO
Yes, we are children of Japan.

KAZUO
That’s right. We are children of Japan. We can easily jump over a river like this one.

Hanako-san, thank you.

YURIKO
Does it hurt, Isamu-san?

ISAMU

(Speaking to the children)
Oh? There is a sound. Everyone, listen very carefully.

(See see see?) There is a sound.
Do you hear it?
(A loud, explosive sound)
Oh, it’s the roar of a machine!

NARRATOR
A real silver-winged plane with the Rising Sun is flying by, and it’s a great victory for the young army.
Everyone is loudly shouting banzai in unison.

EVERYONE
Banzai, Banzai! Hooray for the invincible Imperial Army!
