Jefferson notes that he was serving as a nurse in the hospital at Jefferson Barracks near St. Louis, Missouri, but he has become ill and is unable to work for the time being. He notes that two "elderly" women are working in his ward, which is currently at about half capacity. Jefferson would like to go to the city and get some new clothes so that he would be more inclined to go to church on Sundays.
