Art has been my one true vice and coping mechanism during the pandemic lockdown, and I've created something nearly every single day since COVID-19 hit the US. With the social unrest, death of George Floyd, protests, and 24/7 news coverage telling polarizing depictions of the starkly unjust reality that has existed as long as written history, I felt compelled to capture both the images of the times and make a commentary on our country. While some mistakenly felt the social unrest was abrupt and out of nowhere, I thought the events during 2020 held up a mirror to the American reality. I embedded the key faces, moments, and restless energy of the times through an abstract representation of the American flag to signify the need for us to acknowledge the fabric of this country and what we stand for. --Label design by exhibit curator Nancy DeJoy. 1 of 5: Red, White, Black, and Blue. Part 01
An oil painting of an underwater landscape. A yellow and black sea turtle takes up the left side of the canvas, its arms moving in a swimming motion. Below the turtle is the white, sandy ocean floor and various underwater plants, anemones, and corals in shades of bright blue, yellow, and orange. Other rocks and plants on the ocean floor are brown, green, and pale red. The deep blue of the sea fills the remainder of the piece.

2 of 5: Red, White, Black, and Blue. Part 02
A mixed media oil painting. At the top center is the image of a white sign with the bold black words "black lives matter" in capital letters. Underneath the sign are images of Black Americans that have had their lives taken by police brutality, and pictures of protestors from Black Lives Matter protests, some holding megaphones and illegible signs. A smaller "black lives matter'' sign in capital letters is in the bottom left corner. Layered over the images are strokes of red and white paint with a splotch of blue to the left, and white specks like an abstract American flag. The American flag pattern continues over and over throughout the piece.

3 of 5: Red, White, Black, and Blue. Part 03
An oil painting of a mountain and surrounding scenery. Light and dark green pine trees of similar height cover the foreground of the piece. Past the trees to the left side is a snowy ground, and the right is filled with the light blue of water. In the background are tall green and gray mountains and a white glacier. Above the mountain and glacier is a light blue sky with wispy clouds moving to the left side.

4 of 5: Red, White, Black, and Blue. Part 04
An oil painting of a vibrant interior. The tall walls of the hallway are a bright yellow, with two doorways on each side in a muted purple. Light gray picture frames are placed on either side of the right doorway. Magenta colored bricks line the floor, leading to an opened doorway with an arched window on top, light shining through the window and reflecting onto the ground. Past the opened door is a terrace filled with bright greenery, a tree, and a plant in a yellow pot with red flowers.

5 of 5: Red, White, Black, and Blue. Part 05
An acrylic painting done on linen of a turbulent sea swallowing the Statue of Liberty. The green crown and outstretched hand with the torch peaks out from the violent waves. The whiteness of sea foam splashes up around them from the dark blue and black waves violently crashing in the water. Above the sea is the twisting darkness of storm clouds, a white lightning bolt striking close to the statue's crown.
